An den Dirigenten Kurt Schindler, den er am selben Tag wegen dessen Unordentlichkeit schwer beleidigt hatte: „… I am sorry I spoke as I did this morning. You may be assured I had no intention of offending you. It seemed to me permissable to crack a little joke of a weakness you shared with so many distinguished artists – that of not being very punctitious in details of strictly practical nature, like keeping ones sheet music in order. I had no idea you might be sensitive on this subject. At any rate it was a silly joke on my part and I should not have done it …“ – Gabrilowitsch studierte in St. Petersburg bei Anton Rubinstein und Alexander Glasunow und nach 1894 in Wien bei Theodor Leschetzky. Dort lernte er auch seine spätere Ehefrau, die Sängerin Clara Clemens kennen, eine Tochter von Mark Twain.
