An den Dirigenten Kurt Schindler, den er am selben Tag wegen dessen Unordentlichkeit schwer beleidigt hatte: „… I am sorry I spoke as I did this morning. At any rate it was a silly joke on my part and I should not have done it …“ – Gabrilowitsch studierte in St. Petersburg bei Anton Rubinstein und Alexander Glasunow und nach 1894 in Wien bei Theodor Leschetzky. Dort lernte er auch seine spätere Ehefrau, die Sängerin Clara Clemens kennen, eine Tochter von Mark Twain.
